Change to Card Acceptance in Foreign Countries

Effective October 1, 2007, Servus Credit Union MasterCard® credit card and ChequeWise® payment card transactions will no longer be accepted in the following countries: Iran, Myanmar (Burma), North Korea, Sudan, and Cuba.

CUETS has analyzed both MasterCard credit card and GLOBAL PAYMENT MasterCard transactions from these specific countries over the last year. The analysis showed the impact of this change on our members is extremely small.

Members should know they can continue to use their MasterCard credit card and GLOBAL PAYMENT MasterCard cards to purchase travel arrangements, airfare, all-inclusive vacations, sightseeing tours, etc., prior to travelling to the subject countries. Members can plan to use other payment alternatives, such as traveller cheques or cash, while in these specific countries only.

Members should be aware of the following advice published by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada:

Debit cards and Canadian money transfers are not accepted in Cuba. Credit cards are not widely accepted. Credit cards issued by American financial institutions, such as American Express cards, and some credit cards issued by certain Canadian financial institutions, including MasterCard, are not accepted. Other credit cards are generally accepted at major establishments such as state-run hotels and restaurants, and international resort chains. Private restaurants (Paladars) and private guest houses (Casas Particulares) do not accept credit cards of any kind. Credit card cash advances may be obtained at banks, hotels or Cadeca exchange houses.
