Travelling with your MasterCard®?
Check out these tips to help prevent fraud and save you time and money.
- Phone your card provider and let them know where you're travelling to, when you will arrive and depart and that you'll be using your card while you are there. Credit card companies and financial institutions use sophisticated software to detect fraud. Using your card in another location could raise an alarm to stop your transactions if you don't call and let them know.
- Don't leave your card in your hotel room. If you don't want to carry it with you, put it in the hotel safe.
- Write down the local Canadian phone number for your card provider. If you do need to report a lost or stolen card the toll free number may not work from a foreign location.
- MasterCard Gold and MasterCard Platinum Class® also come with a wallet card. Keep this wallet card with all your travel documents as it contains all the relevant contact phone numbers.
- Tell your financial institution as soon as possible about a lost card. MasterCard has a zero-liability rule for clients victimized by fraud which applies when you're traveling, but you will still want to quickly stop anyone using your card.
- Keep all your MasterCard documents with your passport. For Gold and Platinum cardholders, these documents tell you which out-of-country medical services are covered and which vehicles are covered for Collision Damage Waiver Insurance.
- Never throw away receipts in a public trash can, and always ensure to shred any areas where your account number is visible.
- When making a purchase always keep your card in sight. When the transaction is complete check to make sure the card is your original.
- Check your transactions weekly or daily. For MasterCard you can call 1.888.546.5487, or if you have internet access check online at www.cucardsonline.com.
